In a recent interview with Story Yangu, Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaris opened up about her personal life.  The second born in a family of five siblings, Passaris revealed that she was born in Mombasa to a Greek father and a Kenyan mother.

“She is my second daughter. Yeye alikuwa na mchezo sana,” revealed Mary Passaris, the politician’s mother.

After finishing high school, Passaris joined the hotelier industry, first working at Nyali Beach Hotel where she was the guest relations manager before joining the marketing department.

According to the mother of two, the job played a vital role in her life “since thats where I understood how business should be conducted.”

Relocating to Nairobi

Passaris later relocated to Nairobi where she briefly featured as a model and was crowned runners up Miss World Kenya in 1991.

“I loved it because after modelling, you were given the clothes for free,” she revealed.

Passaris later ventured into entrepreneurship, starting a small printing business in her apartment.

She founded Adopt-a-light in 2002 and the business thrust her into the limelight.

“People started assuming that I was making a lot of money from the business and demanded for bribes. My venture was even discussed in parliament and I woke up one day only to find myself in the dailies,” stated ‘Mama Taa,’ as she is fondly referred to as.

Politics

After developing an interest in politics, Passaris first vied for Nairobi’s women rep in 2013 but came second. In 2017 elections, she first opted for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat before supporters urged her to instead go for the women representative position.

It was not a smooth sailing as she recalled an ugly incident in 2016 where Miguna Miguna stunned viewers of Jeff Koinange Live show when he told her “you are so beautiful, everybody wants to rape you”.

“Before the show I had called my parents and informed them that I would be on TV and they should watch the interview,” she recalled.

Passaris went ahead to clinch the women representative seat for Nairobi County.
