Gunmen on Saturday night raided the home of the Kiambu deputy governor's bodyguard, killed his father, and seriously injured him.

During the attack at Kiambaa village in Kiambu, the gangsters also injured the bodyguard's wife as she pleaded for his life.

The gangsters waylaid John Mungai, a bodyguard of Kiambu Deputy Governor James Nyoro, at around 8pm and shot him in the stomach and chest.

Distress call

Police and witnesses said Mr Stephen Mburu, 60, was shot dead as he responded to his son's distress call.

Mungai, who was driving into his homestead, was confronted by two gunmen who demanded cash, his pistol, and other valuables.

Mungai, 25, is attached to the General Service Unit.

When the gang struck, he grabbed one of them and tried to use him as a shield, but his accomplice shot him in the chest and abdomen.

The sound of shooting attracted the attention of Mungai's father, who rushed to the scene. Witnesses said he was shot in the chest and died on the spot.

Mungai’s wife, Loise Wangare, was shot in the hand as she pleaded with the gunmen to spare her husband.

The gang reportedly searched Mungai but did not find his pistol. They robbed him of Sh6,000 and a mobile phone, then escaped on foot, police said.

Shopping centre

Kabete OCPD Joseph Ongaya said the officer had earlier arrived home and then gone to the local shopping centre.

“We suspect it was then that the gunmen waited for him at the entrance as he drove in and struck. Efforts to trace them are ongoing,” he said.

Wangare told the police that Mungai had left his pistol in a safe in the house before he drove out.

The officer was rushed to Aga Khan Hospital, where he was admitted in a serious condition. He was said to have been shot four times.

Mburu's body was moved to the mortuary.

A shocked Nyoro told The Standard he does not know the motive of the attack, adding,Tthe police are investigating and we should give them time to come up with a comprehensive report."

Call for prayers

The killing came hours after Nyoro had accompanied Deputy President William Ruto to Githunguri, where he told local residents to pray for the county's leadership.

Nyoro told the crowd that he would not wish to see what had happened in other parts of the country (interpreted to mean the resignation of the Nairobi deputy governor) in Kiambu.
