University of Nairobi and few veterinary clinics in Kenya have cremation services for pets but the uptake is low.
Dr. Daniel Muasya, a Veterinary Surgeon at University of Nairobi's Clinical Studies says cremation for pets have been around for decades but Kenyans seems not to know about it or have no interest.
Apparently, many a Kenyans especially in low social cadres don't keep pets with attention they deserve and don't appear to appreciate to keep their memories, when gone, in any way.
However, some especially of Indian descent and other foreigners cremate their pets, especially dogs and cats and others like birds and reptiles.
"We have a facility for animals and clients we get cremate dogs, cats and parrots but very few indigenous people come for the service. The uptake is the same with human cremation" says Dr Muasya.
Cremation prices ranges from Sh5, 000 to Sh10, 000 according to a city veterinarian who arranges the service for his customers.
However, at lower prices Kenyans can also sculpture parts of their pets and keep them as souvenirs says jack Nyawanga, a city-based sculptor.
Nyawanga who specializes in bones artefacts says they offer carving of dead pets bones into mementos but nobody has approached them for the service.
The founder of Victorious Craft Group in Kibera says "It would feel good if you have a necklace, comb or bracelet made from the bones of a pet or animal you loved."
