The Kenyan government through the Ministry of Health has banned the use of shisha in the country.
A gazette notice seen by SDE notice reads in part:
“No person shall import, manufacture, sell, offer for sale, use, advertise promote or distribute shisha in Kenya.”
Speaking to a local news site on 28th December, Health CS Cleopa Mailu stated that discussions with various government departments were still ongoing.
"We are contemplating banning shisha ... we will definitely do that” the CS stated.
Kenya now joins Tanzania and Rwanda, becoming the third country in Africa to ban shisha.
Recently, World Health Organisation (WHO) in an advisory note to regulators revealed that smoking shisha posed grave health risks as shisha smokers in a single session would inhale smoke of 100 or more cigarettes.
Those who flout the rules will face a fine not exceeding Sh50,000 or imprisonment for not more than 6 months.
