A teacher who was part of the team that marked KCSE Chemistry Paper 2 at Loreto High School, Limuru, reportedly collapsed and died. Her colleagues termed it as pressure they were being subjected to.

“The teacher from Kiongwani Secondary School in Makueni County might have been ailing from some life threatening condition like hypertension but the pressure at the marking centre definitely worsened the situation,” said a teacher from Laikipia County.

A teacher who took part in marking Chemistry paper 3 said that this year they were under a lot of pressure and hardly got any time to relax and socialize with the other colleagues.

Unlike last year, they would finish marking the exam papers at 4 pm then take the rest of the day off. This year, they were marking till 10 pm therefore retiring to bed at midnight then.

He added that the situation allowed many mistakes and at times marks were awarded wrongly because of one’s fatigue.

‘’The pressure to finish marking the papers by 15th December was so high that some teachers ended up marking up to 300 papers  a day.’’ He said.

A Kiswahili teacher, told a local daily that they marked exams from 7am to 5pm on most days but on December 10, they were asked to mark from 5am to 10pm.

We used IT experts who were collecting data immediately examiners had marked the tests.
