Residents claim the box was left by Kenyatta after his arrest in 1952 The safe is alleged to contain Kenya’s original map and Kenyatta’s letters

A safe alleged to belong to the late Jomo Kenyatta has been found at an old house in Githunguri, Kiambu County.

The residents claim the two by two metres black box made of hard metal was left by Kenyatta after he was arrested in 1952 and the issuance of a letter by the colonial government ordering the immediate closure of Kenya Teachers College Githunguri where he was a lecturer.

Residents say the safe has been there since 1946 when Kenyatta was a lecturer and are now calling on the county government to preserve the house which is of great intrinsic to the people of Kenya.

The mysterious safe is alleged to have the original map of Kenya and Kenyatta’s letters to other leaders who led the struggle of independence and colonial office.

“The safe has never been opened since Kenyatta was arrested during the struggle to liberate our country from colonial masters in 1952,”says George Gitau 81, a former caretaker.

“He treasured the safe because he was the only one who could open it and I vividly remember the day it was brought by a lorry”, Gitau further added.
