Residents of Kitisuru want Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to shut down a newly built car wash and bar because “it was built illegally”.
The two structures located at the Kitisuru and Peponi road junction were allegedly put up two months ago.
Residents who see the establishments as dangerous, have since filed a petition at the office of the Governor and are demanding for action to be taken.
Under the City County Development Ordinances and Zones, Kitisuru, Gigiri and Ridgeways falls under Low Density Residential Development (One family swelling house).
“This commercial activity poses insecurity. Thugs are likely to use this location to monitor residents who enter and exit the estate at all times,” reads the petition.
Adding: “There will be obstruction of motorists and other road users — and the possibility of accidents on the road as vehicles are making turns to enter or exit the carwash from the main road.”
Residents also claim water from the carwash area is directly drained into the nearby Gethathuru River, thus posing a health risk.
Further, the joint is said to play loud music during odd hours — thus disturbing the peace in the quit gated community.
In 2012, the government approved rezoning some areas in Nairobi including Kileleshwa, Kilimani and Westlands in move to open up more areas for high density development.
The last zoning review carried out in 2004 allowed developers a maximum of four floors for apartments in Westlands, Parklands, Woodley, Kilimani and Kileleshwa.
