The Thursday assault on University of Nairobi students by anti-riot police has attracted public outcry and denunciation from citizens, lawyers and human activists.

Viral video clips of the police brutally attacking the students have angered the public with calls on the government to take action against the culpable officers. In the clips, the officers are seen torturing and bulling the students’ in their halls of residence as they frog-march the students and beat them with riot batons.

The police allegedly got involved in running battles with the students since mid-morning until in the afternoon when they indiscriminately broke into the student’s hostels, libraries and study halls.

They dragged out the students and everyone else on their way before descending on them with slaps and kicks, beating them and cramming them in corners and corridors.

LSK President, Isaac Okero termed the brutal attack on the students as the worst form of cruelty adding that LSK will open private prosecutions of the officers in the next one week if the Internal Affairs of the police fails to take action against them.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) also fated the incident as they promised to work with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority  (IPOA) to pursue the matter and see to it that the officers responsible for the brutality are held to account.

"It can't be business as usual; we must deal with individual officer abusing police powers." KNCHR vice chair George Morara said.

On the material day, the students from University of Nairobi took to the streets to protest the arrest of Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.

The legislator had been arrested on Monday September 25th and spent two nights in police cells before he was released on Wednesday on a cash bail of Sh500, 000. The first time MP was only to be arrested again, immediately after his release and he spent another night in police custody.

Babu Owino was a long serving SONU Chairman before he resigned to vie for the Embakasi East constituency member of national assembly seat.
