Tambach Boys High School was started in 1928 in Keiyo, Elegeyo-Marakwet County after college facilities were offered for the school’s establishment.
At first, it operated as a government school, then turned into Tambach Teachers Training College in the 1940s.In 1964, it was merged with Mosoriot Teachers College, giving birth to the high school.
Tambach, fondly called Boma, is where the house of retired President Daniel arap Moi still stands when he was the deputy principal at a time Tambach was still a teachers’ college.
Boma was so big, some naughty boys would sneak out to the nearby Kipka village to sip busaa and stagger back without raising suspicion, even when the strictest teacher was on duty. Boys adored Miss Kemboi’s biscuits and bread for breakfast, but loathed the severe punishment of lying on rough assembly grounds when caught late for preps.
Notable alumni of Tambach include the late powerful Cabinet minister Nicholas Biwott who attended the intermediate school section from 1951 to 1954 before proceeding to Kapsabet High School.
His time at Tambach was the period Moi was tutoring there — and that was how their long-standing friendship was forged. Others guided by the motto ‘Educo Curo Future’ (education cares for the future) are Finance Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich, Commission on Revenue Allocation chairman Micah Cheserem and late General Lazarus Sumbeiywo, as well as elite marathoners Wilson Kipsang and Vincent Kipruto, who were nurtured on Boma’s complex race track.
Boma boys who recall wearing its black trousers, green pullovers and light-blue shirts include Jeremiah Kiplagat, Director, Institute of Energy Studies & Research, Abraham Kuto, a forensic auditor, Wilson Kigen, Assistant Finance Deputy Director at TSC and Tanui Dennis, Researcher at JK Birir and Co. Advocate, Uasin Gishu Governor aspirant Felix Cheruiyot, Moiben Ward MCA Tirus Ting and Diro John Joe, legal manager for Multiple Hauliers Ltd.
Other notable alumni include Franklin Kigen Biomedical Engineer at Association of Medical Engineers of Kenya, Micah Chelimo, Facilities Engineer at the University of Alaska Anchorage, Kibet Joshua, a journalist with KNA, Paul Komen management representative at Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology (RVIST) and Mark Chepkwony Imports Inspection officer at Kenya Bureau of Standards.
