The bachelorette: Nine most eligible politicians' daughters

News
Mheshimiwa’s girl is likely to be well-educated, exposed, well travelled and without small-time financial problems of estate chicks

Most men wouldn’t mind marrying up, and there is no better catch than a politician’s eligible daughter. There are many perks that come with it: proximity to power and moneyed family networks, besides being cushioned from the vagaries of everyday life.

Then there is the privilege and star power of having proved your worth to have their hand in marriage. What is more, the politician’s daughter is likely to be well-educated, exposed, well-travelled and without small time financial problems that dog chicks in kawaida hoods.

When the wedding finally comes, its likely to attract the who’s who - from the president to the entire Cabinet and other nabobs in government, in addition to the usual corporate types flocking to be closer to the powers that be.

Remember the wedding of Lupita Nyong’o’s younger sister, Esperanza Nyong’o in 2015?

It was at the Great Rift Valley Lodge in Naivasha, where she wedded Tanzanian fiancé Dadi Masesaat. It was a 300-guest, cards-only affair. The ceremony began at 3pm, with the reception taking place three hours later.

Only accredited professional photographers could take pictures. Lodge staff had their phones confiscated and safely kept away to avoid leaking photos of the ceremony. Distinguished guests included Raila Odinga, senators Hassan Omar, Agnes Zani and former Attorney-General Charles Njonjo.

Indeed, a politician’s daughter has the family’s fame and fortune at her disposal.

For the single ambitious Kenyan men, here are some political maiden who can turn around your lives:

 Lupita Nyong’o

The 34-year-old Oscar award-winning actress is Kenya’s best celluloid export. The second daughter of Prof Anyang Nyong’o, the candidate for the Kisumu Governor’s seat, earns major bucks, having appeared in highly rated Hollywood films like 12 Years a Slave, Non-Stop, Queen of Katwe, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Black Panther and The Jungle Book

Just to get a glimpse into her life, consider that Non-Stop, in which she played a flight attendant alongside Liam Neeson, is a $30 million (Sh2.7 billion) action-packed film.

Lupita, who is said to be worth Sh500 million according to America’s Celebrity Net Worth, has also graced the covers of prestigious magazines such as Vogue, People, Elle, Marie Claire, Essence and Glamour.

The alumnus of Nairobi’s Rusinga School and Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, USA, also attended the Yale School of Drama and follows the trend of the Nyongos in education.

She speaks Spanish, Luo, English and Kiswahili. Apart from acting, Lupita is also a filmmaker and in 2009, she was honoured for directing, editing and producing In My Genes, a documentary which followed the stories of Kenyans living with albinism.

Lupita keeps her love life under wraps, and while she has previously been linked to American actor Jared Leto and Somali-Canadian rapper K’Naan (Keinan Abdi Warsame), she was last year rumoured to be dating GQ Style fashion editor, Mobolaji Dawodu, according to Daily Mail.

 Ngina Kenyatta

The only daughter of President Uhuru Kenyatta and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta first made her public appearance in 2013, when her father became Head of State following the 2013 General Election.

She is known for her laid-back fashion sense, which dispenses with dresses as she is more at home in jeans and shirts. She loves big machines with the Land Rover Discovery being the ride she’s mostly spotted in.

She loves music and clubbing, and is also a big fan of her cousin Kavi Pratt, a musician. The private love life of the 27-year-old alumnus of South Africa’s Hilton College is behind a veil of secrecy.

 Tallisa Moi

She is the granddaughter of Kenya’s second president Daniel arap Moi, and the daughter to Philip Moi. She attended the prestigious St Andrews University in the UK, famous for being the alma mater of Kate Middleton and her hubby, Prince William.

From St Andrews, Tallisa moved to Oxford, where she’s currently studying. She hit the news when she was rumoured to be dating Jaba, the second son of President Uhuru after the two publicly shared photos on Instagram.

Tallisa then quit social media. She keeps her private life just that...private!

 June Ruto

The first-born daughter of Deputy President William Ruto made her public debut when she accompanied her father to The Hague for some sessions of his trial at the ICC in 2014. June holds a senior rank as the second consul in the Kenyan embassy in Rome, Italy.

She has a master’s degree in international studies from the University of Queensland, Australia and a bachelor’s degree in diplomacy from the United States International University in Nairobi.

Unlike her father and brother, June’s private life is cloaked in secrecy and last year, flashy businessman Meshack Kimutai denied rumours that they once were an item, contrary to social media yarns.

 Winnie Odinga

She is the youngest daughter of presidential aspirant Raila Odinga. The 27-year-old is the alumnus of Drexel University in Philadelphia, USA, where she earned her two degrees in international studies, international business and economics and her second degree in communication, corporate and public relations.

She also attended USIU for her master’s degree in business administration.

The director of Green Outreach Foundation Africa might venture into politics as she has been seen accompanying her dad at key political rallies and meetings.

Winnie once told KTN News that she’s single because it’s hard getting a nice Kenyan guy to date. Rapping is Winnie’s hidden talent.

 Makenna Maria Ngugi

She is the daughter of Nairobi Woman Rep aspirant Esther Passaris. The petite lass with the looks of a model came to the limelight in 2012 when she launched her music career at the age of 16.

The now 21-year-old attended ACS Cobham International School in the UK, where she studied music. She loves singing, acting and dancing. Some of her favourite international artistes are Rihanna, Akon, TI, T-Pain, Christina Aguilera and Beyoncé.

Currently living in France, Makenna has worked with top music writers such as English artists Richard Darbyshire and Sonia Jones, who works with Sony Music Records to enhance her music career.

 Saumu Mbuvi

The daughter of Mike Sonko, the candidate for Nairobi Governor’s seat, like her father, does not shy away from the media.

She has on several occasions opened up about her relationship with estranged baby daddy Benson Gatu, who has political aspirations in Mathioya, Murang’a County.

The alumnus of JKUAT, where she studied public relations is currently a single mother at the age of 23. The two parted ways after Gatu was accused of dating another politician’s daughter.

Saumu loves flaunting her flashy lifestyle on social media and has recently started featuring prominently in her father’s political campaigns.

 Andrea Kenneth

The daughter of Nairobi Governor seat contender Peter Kenneth caused a social media storm when she was introduced alongside his hunky brother Andrew Kenneth during the launch of her father’s presidential bid in 2013.

Andrea recently revealed that she is dating Adam Fleetwood from the UK through her social media pages. The 21-year-old loves travelling and hanging out with friends. Her number one fan is her boyfriend, whose pictures she mostly posts on her Instagram page.

 Zawadi Nyong’o

Zawadi is Lupita Nyongo’s big sister. The passionate feminist studied at the same college as her sister and after graduating, worked in the US for a year before returning home.

She is currently a digital media strategist and director of 7th Sense Communications, besides running Zero By Zawadi, an African yoga-inspired social enterprise.

Though the 37-year-old is known by many, little is known of her private life.
