Ambassador Margaret Wambui Kenyatta’s burial set for Thursday 13

News

In celebration of a life well lived, condolences have been streaming in to the Kenyatta family following the loss of Ambassador Margaret Wambui Kenyatta, the first daughter of the founding President Jomo Kenyatta.

Born in 1928, she attended Ruthimitu Primary School and later joined the pioneer students of Alliance High School, when it started as a mixed school in 1947.

Her work repertoire is impressive as she served as the Mayor of Nairobi -the first woman to hold that position, became elected councilor for Dagoretti before leaving to become Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, where she served for ten years from 1976 to 1986

Quite the activist for women rights and empowerment, Margaret Wambui Kenyatta joined a number of social welfare organizations, including Maendeleo ya Wanawake, one of Kenya’s most important women’s organizations.

When KANU became victorious in the general election of May 1963, and Kenya won independence that same year, Margaret Wambui Kenyatta joined her father’s efforts to build a unified nation, working particularly to interest women in political activism.

Her political quest saw her elected councilor for Dagoretti and was re-elected for four subsequent terms. In 1964, she was awarded the Order of the Queen of Sheba by Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia in recognition of her efforts.

Despite such an industrious political career, the deceased opted out of the limelight and was leading a quiet life at the time of her passing.

Family and friends have been meeting for prayers at her home in Lavington. Wambui’s funeral service is set to be held on Thursday 13th April 2017 at the St Andrews PCEA Church at 10am. Burial will follow thereafter at the Ngando home.
