Senzenina: I had to choose between becoming a thug or rhyming my way out of Eastlands, admits rapper King Kaka

News

King Kaka’s latest rendition of the song, Senzenina featuring Red Fourth Choir, is dedicated to a departed friend. “and by friend it can be anyone , Sister, Brother, Father , Mother. May we all find peace,” he writes about the song, whose video is set to be released in a fortnight.

Senzenina, which loosely translates to ‘What Have We Done?’ is a South African anti?apartheid folk song commonly sung at funerals, demonstrations and in churches.

Prior to the release of the song, King Kaka recounts in an Instagram post how he has lost over 12 friends through crime, and explains how music saved him from a life of crime.

Here is the full post; “Mimi ni msee wa Eastlando nimeishi Jeri pale kwa Ukuta Ilikuwa imechorwa Beirut sikuhizi ni ma Ad, Then Marish kwa Ukuta ya Dr. Kraph hapo karibu na kwa kina Musa Otieno then most parts of my life Kaloleni aka A1000 streets aka Ololo. And in all these hoods kile nimelearn ni you have to choose a path and stick to it. I can count over 12 friends that i have lost kwa crime and all them brutally murdered. Sababu life is hard in the ghetto and getting a gun is easy, the easier route mostly won but I decided to pick up a pen and just rhyme. My friends knew i would definitely join the crime line of duty. It was either i became a thug or rhyme my way out of Eastlands. And even some that i lost convinced me to stick to that . Who Would Have Known that King Kaka would be a household name and Brand. Mungu hatambui Usingizi.”
