Nostalgia: When Baseball jerseys were high fashion

Baseball is an American bat and ball team sport that is not played in Kenya.

Few even understand the rules and where the passion comes from in seeing players with helmets batting a stitched leather coated ball being hit with a bat in what appears like cricket but it’s not cricket which has 11 players while baseball has nine.

We hardly also have Kenyans who are fans of baseball teams like the New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, Atlanta Braves or Los Angeles Dodgers in Major League Baseball.

But there was a time when matatus, especially those plying the Eastleigh route, sported their names and with it, the popularity of baseball caps and replica jerseys of baseball teams with White Sox being elevated into fashion fads.

It was not uncommon for dudes in college moustache to wear a White Sox cap, jersey and baggy jeans then to vegetate at the bus stop for hours on end waiting for a matatu named Chicago White Sox...

Baseball kit as fashion was masculine as few Nai chicks took to it. The baseball bottoms were also not included in the fad!
