Late Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo’s lions are cheerful and ready to mate after they were rescued from his ranch where they faced starvation.
The three lions, a male and two females ,were taken by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) in May 2015 after it was established they were on the verge of death.
An officer at KWS told The Nairobian they were famished when they rescued them together with two cheetahs. In a past interview, the late politician said he spent Sh700,000 per year to feed a single lion but after his death they were allegedly neglected.
The lions were put together with others orphaned at the Animal Orphanage where they developed good relations and secured suitors.
“They chew between seven and 12 kilogrammes of meat daily. They look healthy and contented. One is already mating,” said a KWS animal keeper.
