Withdrawal or pull out method is when a man pulls his penis out of the vagina before ejaculation to keep sperms out of the vagina hence preventing pregnancy during sex. It is estimated that over 40 million couples in the world rely on this oldest way to practice birth control.
Withdrawal is very popular among young people and adults who are in a relationship here in Kenya because it is easy, has no side effects, its free, convenient, and safe since it can prevent pregnancy when no other method is available.
But how effective is withdrawal method as a form of birth control?
There are very few risks associated with using withdrawal as your only form of birth control. The biggest disadvantage is the risk of using withdrawal incorrectly .Withdrawal method can be effective when it is done correctly. It is estimated that for every 100 women whose partners use withdrawal method, 4 will become pregnant each year if it is done correctly and 27 will become pregnant each year if it is not done correctly.
It is recommended that people who have the greatest self-control, experience and trust can use withdrawal method effectively. Men who ejaculate prematurely should not use this method. Men who use this method must always know when they are about to ejaculate and pull out. Experts believe that pre- ejaculation can lead to pregnancy and recommends that a man should always urinate between ejaculations before having sex again to clear up the urethra.
Men should always be careful when pulling out to avoid semen or sperms from spilling into their partners’ vulva because pregnancy can happen.
People need to know that Withdrawal is not a form of safer sex since it cannot protect you from STIs and HIV. It only prevents pregnancy. It is recommended that both parties should know their HIV status by requesting the test together to protect each other from STIs. Moreover, it is recommended that couples need to be faithful all the time. If this is not possible then one should always use a latex condom to reduce the risk of infection.
