Standard writer takes to the gospel scene with new single

News

Singer Jeckonia Otieno

Dwight L. Moody once said, “I know the Bible is inspired because it inspires me.” Seems Jeckonia Otieno, a writer with Standard Media took this saying seriously and the Bible inspires the music in Him.

“Nothing beats Christian music – music that touches the heart, inspires, uplifts and gives hope,” say Jeckonia who does music under the brand Jey.

And true to his word, his song Ninaimba does not disappoint. Done in contemporary rhumba style, the song explores the love of God.

“I sing because He saved me; He has saved me because He loves me; He loves me because He created me,” says Jey.

With a flow that resembles a relay race, the song is done by Jey featuring Nsanda (Jerome) a Congolese living in Kenya and Ovi (Jacob) a Tanzania whose part in the video has been done by George Mwema.

In crisp clear Kiswahili which is finally ends in Lingala, the song explores reasons why people should sing and praise God.

“If we don’t praise Him, then, the Bible says even the stones shall praise Him,” he says.

Apart from writing which is his main hustle, Jey is a worship leader at ACK St Matthew’s Church Karen. He says if you listen to all his songs beginning with Siogopi and now Ninaimba, you will never get whiff of lusciousness that has come to be associated with Christian music in order to sell.

Jey argues that his is music based on God’s word because, “if it’s not about God, then it serves me no purpose; my life, my everything depend deeply on Him and I have seen Him work in my life.”

Jey whose father was a choir member at ACK St Stephen’s Cathedral, Jogoo Road many years ago says he must have taken after his late dad’s talent.

He says that there is no stopping now that the journey has started and he is ready to give inspiring music. He works with Jesse Bukindu, a renowned audio producer and the video produed by Dr Eddie is quite simple without any complexities just the need to spread the word.

“I don’t care what genre anyone picks because I am more into content, not form.”

In this age when music trends are going crazy, Jey reminds Christians that we must not conform to the patterns of this world but be transformed by the renewal of their minds.
