Dr Aggrey Boys High School nestled in the picturesque Taita Hills in Taita-Taveta County is about 200 metres from Wundanyi town. It is named in honour of a US-trained Ghanaian missionary and educationist, Dr James Kwegyir Aggrey, who was instrumental in promoting education at the coast.
Founded in 1928, this intermediate school by the Anglican Church admitted its first student in 1931 - when Sir Joseph Aloysius Byrne was Kenya’s Governor.
The school registration code – 01101101- has for decades given old boys bragging rights. Teachers at the school nicknamed ‘Doc’ took advantage of the number one tag to push their learners to excel in both academics and sports.
Most ‘Doc’ old boys, particularly those who studied there from 2000 recall the hustle they underwent to bath during the dry season. Due to the scarcity of water, they were compelled to take their bath at the ‘Hebron’ spring at 4am before morning preps started at 4.40am!
Another lasting memory for ex-students was the protracted beef they had with St Mary’s Lushangonyi over Mwasere Girls, a sister school of Doc, as both schools tried woo the lasses!
Notable alumni guided by ‘Elimu na Maendeleo’ (Education and Development) motto who wore light-blue shirts, dark-blue trousers and dark-blue cardigans include High Court Judge Msagha Mbogholi, journalists Francis Mutalaki (KTN) and Michael Mwandigha (Pwani FM), South Africa-based rugby international player Willy Ambaka, Ushuru football striker Zablon Mwale, Mombasa’s Praise Chapel Bishop Tee and Wusi/Kishamba ward MCA, Austin Mwambi.
