Nostalgia: Chain smokers loved the car cigarette lighter

News

The matatu driver would press the cigarette lighter down its slot and a few seconds later, the red end of it would be sending plumes of smoke after making contact with the cigarette.

The same would happen with coughers gassing private cars in traffic. Woe unto those who tried lighting up, but missed the cig and directed the hot lighter onto their lips, resulting in a sizzling sound of wet moist flesh being roasted, followed by shrieking curse word!

But today, and with the onslaught of health campaigns against cigarette smoking, modern jalopies come with the slot, but hardly the black cigarette lighter that had a white sign on it.

By the way, does anyone know where car cigarette lighters were taken for repairs when they stopped working?

Anyway, today, the car cigarette receptacle has been redesigned for the phone charger, the USB and car television. In fact, Hyundai scrapped the cigarette lighter for the USB on all its makes sold in Korea in 2013.

The car cigarette lighter was introduced in 1925 - the year Edward Grigg was Governor of Kenya Colony. Just so you know, it was his wife, Lady Grigg, who made Pumwani Maternity a reality in 1927.
