#StraightOuttaCompton

When the movie came out in August it grossed $200.4 million (Sh20.4 billion) against a budget of $28 million (Sh2.8 billion). The film about the rise and fall of the Compton, California hip-hop group N.W.A borrows its title from the name of their 1988 debut studio album and the album’s title track. The movie received positive reviews so much so that tweeps went on to customise their twitter profile pictures and merchandise to include the film’s poster that read, ‘Straight Outta...’

#Pray4BK and #BobbiKristina

Following the death of 22-year-old Bobbi Kristina Brown — the only daughter of Whitney Houston — on July 26, Twitter was ablaze with message of condolence to the family. Prior to her death the hashtag #Pray4BK (Pray For Bobbi Kristina) was trending when she went into a coma since she was found face down in her bathtub on January 31. Most of the tweets likened her to her mother who passed on three and a half years before she did when she drowned in a bathtub due to a drug overdose.

#ToPimpAButterfly

It was all fun and games in the hip-hop scene until Kendrick Lamar’s released his third studio album, To Pimp A Butterfly, that went on to bag 11 nominations in the 58th annual Grammy awards – the first hip-hop album to ever bag that number of nominations. Many went on to Twitter to try explain what the title of the album stood for. The album went on to cement his legitimacy as a hip-hop artiste.

#CallmeCaitlyn

When Bruce Jenner made the decision to go undergo a gender reassignment procedure, tweeps joined his family to support his decision. He later changed his name to Caitlyn Jenner and was shortly after named Woman of the Year by Glamour magazine. It was at this point that hell broke loose, at least it did on Twitter. The announcement unleashed a firestorm of controversy, with most critical comments coming from women who were upset that a man turned woman would be given the honourable and distinguished title of “Woman of the Year” when so many naturally born females of distinction were overlooked and not even considered as candidates for the honour. As if that were not enough, it was reported that she was considering adopting a child and raising the child as its transgender mother.

#CharlieSheen

Known for his role in the series, Two and a Half Men, it came as a shock to many when the Hollywood actor revealed to the world his HIV status during a chat with Matt Lauer on The Today Show. He claimed that he had to make out-of-court settlements of about $10million with “less than 10” people over keeping his HIV status a secret. He said he had been battling the virus for four years, and only came out in a bid to stop being blackmailed by people who threatened to expose him. He went on to admit he had had unprotected sex with two people since the diagnosis, insisting they were both under the care of his doctor and fully informed of his condition though he is not entirely sure how he contracted the virus in the first place.

#HelloChallenge

This hashtag stems from Adele’s latest hit single Hello released on October 22, 2015. In what is probably the greatest trolls of 2015, the challenge involves you messaging your ex one line of the lyrics. The song racked in over 320 million views in two weeks since its release.

#50Centbroke

It was just three days after rapper 50 cent was ordered to pay $5 million (Sh510 million) to his rival Rick Ross’ ex-girlfriend, Lastonia Leviston, who sued him for posting a sex tape online to millions of viewers in an attempt to embarrass Ross that he filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. It however appears that the backlash on Twitter was too much to handle that he went on to social media and posted photos; one where he is covered in 100 dollar bills and another where he stacks ups the $100 dollar bills to spell the word ‘BROKE’ with the caption, “Man this lunch money, I gotta go to work I’m still up, no Sleep at all.”
