Why I didn't celebrate my parents as my mashujaa

News

Not long ago, we had mashujaa (heroes) day in Kenya. Since then, I have been monitoring social media and even listened to my friends making calls to at least pass a word to their heroes/heroines. This is a noble thing and only a fool can’t do that. It is good to let someone know what you feel about them.

My worry is, why celebrate the same person since you were born to date. Assuming you had a list of heroes and heroines, how will it look like? Mum, mum, mum ………., ( years since you were born). Is this real? Is it Practical? I have not celebrated my parents as my mashujaas of late because I had done that long ago and they know I regard them so. Mashujaas are not limited to mum and dad.

I want to confess that I was touched by the nurses of Kenyatta National hospital who are in the oncology ward. Subject to confirmation room 1A. Angels fighting cancers! Ouch. Couldn’t believe my eyes. The first picture you see from a distance are babies playing games. Memories of the past run into your mind. It is good to be a baby, this is undisputable. At a close interaction, tears and pain is what you encounter. Children suffering of what they don’t know. Skin cancer, leukemia, name them. Children losing weight just like that. The innocent children making wishes of hope. Praying for one another to be okay. What touched me most is when I heard a baby struggling to say, ‘’ I want to be like other children, I also pray for Njoro, Kamau and others to get out of their beds so that we can play like other children’’. I thought I had a strong heart but my heart proved my mind wrong. These children fighting cancer with a lot of hope of a bright tomorrow, you are my heroes/heroines.

The nurses in this ward you are blessed. I liked your motto. Do your best while you are with these children. This is service to God. My prayers are with you. You take some abandoned children (not all) and you own them. Facing the smelling tumours, cleaning them and handling the disfigured shapes of children due to skin cancer is a selfless service. What I couldn’t understand is the fact that, you can end your shift now and when you report next, you find the innocent angel you were nursing has gone to be with the lord. This happens not once or twice, it happens. One thing, your labour is not in vain, your reward coming. You are my heroes and heroines.

I want to end it there. Anyone who takes someone’s burden and owns it, continue doing that. Humanly, we may not appreciate you in the name of, that is your work. Don’t mind us, God in heaven is watching. Your other blessing is on your way.

Signed,

John
