The former golden boy of athletics has today been released from jail after serving just one year for shooing dead his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp
Oscar Pistorius has been freed from prison tonight having served just 12 months of a five-year sentence for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
The Paralympian, 28, is now at his uncle’s mansion where he will see out the rest of the term under house arrest.
He will be required to meet Steenkamp’s parents Barry and June “if and when they agree to meet him”, said correctional services minister Michael Masutha.
Lawyers for the athlete, nicknamed ‘Blade Runner’ have previously indicated he is keen to arrange such a meeting.
Mr and Mrs Steenjamp had appealed against the double-amputee’s early release under correctional supervision but did not make further representations to the parole board that authorised his release last week.
His lawyer Brian Webber confirmed the release and said: “He is at home already.”
Pistorius’s release from Kgosi Mampuru II Prison in Pretoria is a day earlier than expected.
He had been jailed for shooting the 29-year-old model through a locked bathroom door in the early hours of St Valentine’s Day 2013.
Prosecutors plan to appeal to South Africa’s Supreme Court to get the sentence upgraded to murder - meaning Pistorius could face a minimum of 15 years in prison if convicted.
The former Paralympic gold medalist was sentenced on October 21 last year to five years in jail for killing Reeva Steenkamp.
It followed a high-profile trial which was broadcast around the world, culminating in a dramatic fall from grace for the now 28-year-old.
Pistorius will be released on house arrest.
There has been speculation that he will go and live at his wealthy uncle’s home in Pretoria.
While under house arrest, Pistorius’ movements are expected to be heavily restricted.
However, conditions often vary according to each individual case.
Pistorius is said to be desperate to get his life back on track and wants to work with disadvantaged youngsters when released.
However, his release is not the end of the legal process.
Next month he faces an appeal in the Supreme Court with prosecutors attempting to see him charged with murder.
If this happens, he could be jailed again for 15 years.
