Molo Academy: Where Eddy Kimani, Kombani chewed books

Molo Academy Secondary School is located at the heart of the Great Rift Valley.

The school’s name ‘Molo’, which it took up in 1986, was adopted from the nearby town, a settlement established primarily because of its fertility and vast vegetation. The town is also one of the coldest places in the country.

The mixed day and boarding school is located in Milimani estate, the poshest suburb in Molo town where the notables of that region reside.

Nicknamed ‘Acedy,’ the school was never known for any sporting prowess - but remained the region’s academic giant together with the neighbouring Mary Mount Secondary School.

Acedy weathered many years without a school bus, in fact, students and teachers would take long rides  on their ‘face me,’ which was basically a pickup with benches placed on either sides to serve as seats. Mr Ikenye, the Agriculture teacher, was the darling of students due to his rib-cracking jokes and accent.

Among those who lived with the motto ‘Aiming Higher’, and donned the navy blue shorts and skirts, checked shirts and blouses and grey pullovers, include author and banker Kinyanjui Kombani, former Capital FM presenter and current Director of Communications for Nakuru County, Eddy Kimani, Urban Coffee Grind and Grill owner Wilfred Wachira and Outsourced Accountancy CEO Felix Osumo.

In a bid to lift performance standards, the alumni have been hosting the top KCSE performers luncheon through Friends of Molo Academy for the last five years.
