There are times when we think we have hit rock bottom and there are people who have really hit rock bottom.
Esther Randa tried to kill herself by setting herself on fire. She gave her moving story to Anthony Ndiema and Dj Krowbar on the Tukuza gospel show.
Esther grew up in the peaceful countryside but owing to conflict in her family, her self-esteem went very low. She was further diagnosed with a mental illness early in life that affected her deeply.
As she grew up, she brought all the negativity and self-hate to her marriage. Esther tried to play the good wife and hid the hurt from him and the rest of the family.
The year 2002, after her family had gone to sleep, she poured a jerrican of kerosene on her body and lit the match.
Her husband, children and neighbors scrambled to put out the fire. She had 54% burns at the end of that ordeal.
She was in the ICU for 14 days and almost died while they performed reconstructive surgery. Altogether, she stayed in hospital for 10 months.
It has taken 13 years to get over the fact that she tried to commit suicide by burning herself.
