Human rights activist Francis Awino has called for stronger civic engagement and accountability in governance, urging closer collaboration between institutions, students and grassroots movements.
Speaking during a public address, Awino, Mtetezi Grassroots Convener, said there is a need to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world experiences.
He noted that structured platforms for direct engagement between students and activists would help build a more informed and participatory society.
Awino also criticised what he termed as inconsistent leadership and called for contested leadership outcomes to be subjected to independent public audits.
“You cannot collect money from hardworking citizens and then fail to account for it,” he said, warning that a lack of accountability in leadership risks weakening institutions.
His remarks come amid efforts by the government to register more voters ahead of the 2027 General Election.
