It has been a while since Disney made an animation that was reminiscent of the late 1980s to early 1990s Broadway musical style that was common in classics like Aladdin, Beauty and The Beast, and The Lion King, but this new film brings a merging of the old with the new.
It is a Broadway musical style animation that embraces modern humour, modern twists and the vast visual possibilities of computer-generated animation.
Frozen is set in the fictional Nordic country of Arendelle. We are introduced to two royal sisters, Anna and Elsa, the latter of whom possesses magical powers that allow her to freeze anything she touches and to produce snow and ice out of thin air.
However, after a childhood accident almost kills Anna, she has her memory wiped and Elsa is ordered to keep her powers secret and never to play with Anna again, so the pair grow up apart.
Years later, after their parents are tragically killed in a storm, Anna and Elsa are now young adults ready to re-open the gates of their castle as Elsa, the eldest of the two, is to be officially crowned queen.
On the day of Elsa’s coronation, however, Anna falls in love with Hans, a man she has just met, and as a result, the sisters get into a fight causing Elsa to lose control of her powers and accidentally curse the entire kingdom with eternal winter, as a result she flees to an ice palace she creates in the mountains. In order to save her sister and the kingdom,
Anna sets off to find her, gaining help from a friendly ice salesman Krisoff, his reindeer Sven and a talking snowman called Olaf they meet along the way.
Thumbs Up
The script is well written, it is witty and funny, plus the visuals are stunning. The film is beautifully animated and the level of detail on the whole set is extremely impressive. Also, the characters are lovable and very entertaining to watch. Further the musical numbers, which are strategically placed within the film, are catchy and add a nice artistic touch to the film.
Thumbs Down
It has some clichés here and there, and in some instances, the pacing is a little off.
Verdict
Frozen is a hugely entertaining; it is one of those films that everyone can enjoy everyone from adults, to children. A definite must watch.
