I help families enjoy cool, lush green balconies and backyards

MONEY

JAMES NJOROGE, whose clients include those interested in artificial, safe playing fields, football pitches, balconies, playgrounds, and backyards, learnt how to install artificial grass through YouTube. He tells SILAS NYAMWEYA how he is able to attract clients from all over the country.

Kindly introduce yourself:

My name is James Njoroge. I do artificial grass carpet installation countrywide, and other services like wallpaper installation and wall-to-wall carpets.

What motivated you to venture into artificial grass business?

I saw the need in the market as artificial grass was just being introduced into the country. Many people online were asking where they could find artificial grass and who could install it for them. I quickly taught myself how to install the grass.

What special skills do you need for professional installation and how did you acquire them?

There are no special skills required. I learnt by watching videos on YouTube. However, you require special tools to perform the job. One just needs to be creative because you can find a floor that has too many corners or round-shaped balconies, and you may need to set joints perfectly so that they cannot be seen.

Who are your main clients and how do you get them?

My clients are mostly people in apartments with balconies. They usually want that soft natural feel on their balconies when resting. The grass also creates a safe space for kids to play around. Others are homeowners who want their backyards to look green and welcoming. I get my clients from social media and through referrals.

When did you start this business?

I started in 2017. Some of my major projects are a playing field on Ngong Road, and a children's playing field in Lavington.

How well does this business pay?

I make Sh20,000 to Sh40,000 per month. Last December, I made good money since many people were revamping their homes.

Where is the business situated?

For now, I just deliver the catalogue to my clients at their convenient place and time. They choose what they want and I then take measurements and cross my fingers for the job to come. My goal this year is to have a physical office.

What are some of the challenges you face in your business?

I have a few challenges because right from the word go, I make everything clear to my clients, including payment terms. One time I used wrong measurements and the materials were about three metres short and the client would hear none of it. I used my money to buy the additional metres and when I finished the job, she sent me the money. I later did another job for her when she moved out.

What would you advise someone who is interested in this kind of business?

Just as I saw an opportunity, you can too. Just do a good job, exceeding the client's expectations, and you will get a lot of referrals. Have the right tools to perform the job, know how to do measurement and lastly be trustworthy.

Your parting shot?

I would urge young people to take every chance and opportunity that comes their way and learn new skills to enable them make earn an income and pay their bills. Let's grind together!
