The group was awarded the Best Group accolade during the MTV Africa Music Awards gala on Saturday night in a continental affair that was dominated by Nigerian musicians.
The glamorous ceremony held at the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg and hosted by Bonang Matheba was the biggest night for Nigerian star boy Wizkid who stole the show by winning three awards, that making him the biggest star in the continent this year.
The young singer who has been living under the shadow of veteran stars won the Artiste of the Year, Best Male and Best Collaboration at the expense of Diamond, whose star seemed to dim as he went home empty handed.
Popular Nigerian singer Yemi Alade did not disappoint as she took home the Best Female award as fellow Nigerian Teckno scooped the Best Breakthrough Act
The awards saw changing fortunes as South African artistes, who used to dominate most continental awards in the past, got a run for their money. However, their very own Cassper Nyovest, Caster Semenya, Shekinah and Kyle and DJ Maphorisa also got awarded.
Other winners included Patoranking (Song of the Year in Partnership with Google – My Woman, My Everything featuring Wande Coal), Jah Prayzah from Zimbabwe (Listener’s Choice), and Vivian Onano and Mary Taedzerwa (Africa Reimagined). Legendary singer Hugh Masekela was feted by being awarded the Legend Award while Drake was voted the Best International star.
