Beyond the pretentiously wrong national discussion on the escalating wage bill, we need an honest one on city socialites. When my boorishly patriarchal community churns out two socialites in a space of five years, it is about time the First Lady summoned all the ladies to KICC.
There was ‘Toxic’ (Juliet Kwamboka) who has since been relegated to the ‘has-been’ category. And now the latest sensation is the coarsely named Corazon Kwamboka. Her sizeable booty had men leering and dropping unsavory comments on the social media.
Superabundant bottoms
It seems the so-called socialites only claim to fame is their superabundant bottoms, not high cheekbones on angular features, which most lack anyway. Their being endowed in the grey marbles department is suspect. Yet alas! You can hardly go very far with looks or great bodies without enough brains to back it up. Trust me, like a condom.
Men have weighed in on the issue, shocked at the brazen folly of socialites, despite the welcome eye-candy and good distraction from Jubilee scandals. But the self-entitled Twitter Feminists are curiously quiet on the phenomenon. When Lupita Nyong’o won the Oscar, they engaged us in highly erudite discussions on the potential of the African woman. But on socialites and other problems inflict on themselves, they take a French leave from the social media.
A typical Twitter Feminist reads and quotes the New York Times or some other esoteric publication. They are quick to brand any man who dares point out bad behaviour in women a sexist, chauvinist or misogynist. They are urbane, more at home in shopping malls than the Muthurwas and Gikombas of Nairobi. They prefer Twitter to Facebook.
They have an opinion on everything. From the inconvenient wage bill to ill-fated Malaysian Airliner that disappeared into thin air-literally. From their rantings, you will think they don’t live in Kenya psychologically. They live in Ivory Towers. I think the Chinese should start poaching their ivory.
Yet, they have nothing to comment on socialites, who help the society ghettorize women. We can only take women as serious as they want to be taken.
As they would have noticed, no sane man from either political divide has attacked Lupita Nyong’o. She may not be the hallmark of life for every woman, but her approach should be. Socialites lead perishable lives. Sooner rather than later, they are dethroned. Their sell-by-date is often immediately after 25.
Nudes on Instagram
If these theoretical feminists have the gall to insult me, they should have the courage to tell their sisters that they don’t help the female cause if all they bring to the table are their big bums and nudes on Instagram.
Like porn stars, socialites are an antithesis to feminism. By living by their rules and wielding their sexuality as the best selling point, they confront men where we are weakest; visually. But this cannot change the mindset that has ensured women play second-class citizens for a long time.
By me, a widow in the village who wrestles societal norms to ensure that her daughter finishes school ahead of sanctioned teenage marriages, does a better job than a woman insulting Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero for slapping Nairobi Women’s Rep Rachel Shebesh on Twitter.
Feminists should rein on young women whose sole ambition in life is showcase their nudes (sad) or appear in music videos (depressing). They should encourage them to aim higher.
I reckon that true equality and equity will be attained when women will start being rational beings. They should stop the pissing matches with men. Men are not the best yardstick of standards. However, when men are in charge, there is a semblance of order. Wonder what will happen when women take charge.
