Jamaican-born reggae and dancehall artiste, Shalkal, is calling upon upcoming artistes to take criticism positively now that the year has just started. In an exclusive chat with Standard Entertainment, the 38-year-old artiste, who has gained recognition for his music inspired by his Jamaican heritage, says that for an artiste to emerge at the top, they must be willing to put in the work. To him, success comes from consistency and authenticity.

"Be yourself. Put 100 percent in your work and learn to take constructive criticism. As you plan your year and set new targets, take time to reflect inwardly also. What are you doing differently?" he says.

Speaking about what has worked for him, the Envious SO hitmaker attributed his success to his multitalented nature. In the exclusive chat, Shalkal said he writes, produces, and makes beats for his songs.

"I write all my songs, make all my beats and produce 98 percent of my songs. Through my own label, Shalkal music production, I have been able to work with various artists in Jamaica. I have learnt a lot working with different type of artiste. I normally advise the upcoming ones to always put in the work. Do not be caught up by a moment," he added.

Shalkal, currently based in Chicago, Illinois, says that one of the highlights of his career has been witnessing his songs play in non-English speaking nations. Yet, they still capture the hearts of many, affirming his earlier point to always be authentic and original with content creation.

"One of the highlights of my career so far has been seeing one of my songs play in some none English speaking country and reaching the mind and hearts of so many people. This in itself is an accomplishment for me. Music comes to me naturally as I am from a musical background and those to be able to capture audiences overseas is something I can never take for granted," he said.

As the year gains momentum, Shalkal is looking forward to performing in Nairobi, Kenya. According to him, Kenya is rich in culture, and visiting the country is on his bucket list for this year. Asked who are some of the local artistes he would like to collaborate with, Shalkal, who has a background in Real Estate, was quick to point out Wyre, Tanasha, etc.

"I got a few favorite but Wyre, Sanaipei Tande and Tanasha Donna. I would love to work with them because I like their melody," he added.
