Billed as one of the greatest charity music extravaganza of all times, the Global Citizen festival did not disappoint as over 60 artistes answered the call to raise awareness on climate change and ending poverty.
With thousands attending the main shows in New York and Accra, Ghana, millions from across the world followed the live-streamed event that went on for 24-hours over the weekend. The festival saw more than $800 million (Sh97 billion) announced to end poverty. A total of $440 million (Sh53 billion) was earmarked to end poverty in Africa.
Jennifer Lopez, Coldplay, Billie Eilish, NY, Metallica, Charlie Puth, Jonas Brothers, Maneskin, Mickey Guyton and Rosalia are some of the artiste who led the performances in New York. African stars Gyakie, Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Stormzy, Tems and Uncle Waffles took charge in Ghana.
In Paris, Elton John was the surprise act as he took to stage after the crowd enjoyed a pre-recorded performance by the K-pop band BTS. Kylie Minogue, Green Day and Andrea Bocelli also had pre-recorded performances. Also performing in Paris was Ed Sheeran, Stormzy and Black Eyed Peas. Stevie Wonder performed in the Los Angeles show.
And five Kenyans will be part of a special world selected BeyGood fellowship team, the 2023 class that will be crusading this year's theme on ending poverty. Joining the team of 15 picked from across the continent for the year-long fellowship will be Arthur Kamau, Charity Kithaka, Diana Cheronoa, Kamuel Oure and Sherly Kambuni.
"Across six continents, artists will help rally citizens in demanding that governments, major corporations and philanthropists work together to defend the planet and defeat poverty," Global Citizen said in a statement.
The inaugural Global Citizen Festival took place on September 29, 2012 with 60,000 in attendance on the Great Lawn in New York's iconic Central Park.
