The decision to follow in the footsteps of one’s parents is one that every child deals with when they come face to face with their individual career choice- crossroad.

And while a good number of children will always adopt the quintessential path already set for them by their parents; another group takes a complete 360-degree turn.

In the Kenyan scene, most politicians’ kids are in the arts and entertainment scene. Weird, right?

Take the case of Zachary Saitoti, the son of the late Internal Security minister George Saitoti.

He is a freelance photographer and proprietor of Nairobi’s Shifteye Studios. The studio captures art in all forms - illustrations, poetry jam sessions, fashion, photography and music.

Then there is Lupita Nyong’o, an Oscar award-winning actress with an illustrious career in Hollywood, and is the daughter of the Governor of Kisumu Anyang’ Nyong’o.

Lupita has an impressive Hollywood portfolio with big blockbusters like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Jungle Book, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Black Panther, under her belt.

Additionally, she has also dabbled in Broadway and featured in one of the hugest productions of 2015 and 2016: Eclipsed. The production made history as the first all-black and female creative cast and team to premiere on Broadway.

Interestingly enough, Lupita is not alone in her love for the arts, her younger brother Junior Nyong’o seems to be following in her footsteps.

His claim to fame is appearance in show host Ellen DeGeneres’ star-studded selfie during the 2014 Oscar awards that went viral, but now he is making waves for himself in the film world.

He is now an actor by profession and even won Majorie Foster Gilbert Award for Outstanding Student Performer, and further, landed his first film role in Tom Ford’s film, Nocturnal Animals, which stars starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams.

Also, we have Muhoho Kenyatta, the youngest of President Uhuru’s sons who is a fashion designer.

He launched his own fashion line - Nomadic Designs - with friends at the age of 17.

Finally, there is also Klein Kalonzo who seems to have taken a different path from his older brother Kennedy.

He is an alumnus of the University of Nairobi, School of Journalism, and even owns a studio.
