Take care of my children when I am gone, Mugithi singer ‘Murimi wa Kahalf’ told Kirinyaga governor

Stage dancer of the late Sammy Murimi Nderi's  Kikuyu hit ''Ino Ni Momo'' Ms  Janet Wambui addressing mourner  at the funeral ceremony

A village like Gatugura in Kirinyaga has never seen such a large number of beauties.

The village, tucked deep in the interior of Gichugu Constituency, hosted the beauties as it bid farewell to one of its recognised sons - the late Sammy Murimi Nderi alias wa Kahalf of the hit song Ino ni Momo.

Large turnout

Villagers were awed by the turnout of well wishers who braved the muddy pathways and chilly weather to give the late musician a hero’s send off.

It was a sight to behold as the visitors took over the sleepy village, which was for a moment turned into a beehive of activity.

Aged 32, wa Kahalf had three wives. The first wife, Josphine Wanjiku (Nyatoro), who was a comedian, however passed away earlier before the artiste met his second love, Nancy.

In the first marriage, the couple was blessed with a girl, Grace Wambui. Their second daughter, Rita Wanjiku was the fruit of his second union. He did not have any children with his third wife, Zaweria by the time of his death on June 4.

Grandmother love

A large convoy escorted the cortège from Kenyatta University to Gatugura.

The singer, who was the only child of Cyrus Nderi and Grace Kanuthu (which translates to ‘small half’, hence his stage name ‘wa Kahalf’), was brought up by his grandmother after his parents separated when he was still young.

His father later migrated to Meru County where he still lives, but was in attendance during the burial.

Last wishes

It emerged that before his death at St Francis Hospital in Nairobi, Murimi sent a text message to Kirinyaga Governor Joseph Ndathi and informed him that his state of health had worsened. He told him that should he not make it, he would like the governor to ensure his two children went through school.

Local dignitaries

“As I stand here to mourn and praise my good friend Murimi, I must reveal to you what he requested me to do in the event of his death. He asked me to take care of his two daughters and ensure they finished school. I hereby promise before you that I will fulfill his wishes,’’ Ndathi told the mourners.

Among the mourners were the Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, Kirinyaga Senator Daniel Karaba, Kirinyaga Central MP Gachoki Gitari and his Gichugu counterpart Njogu Barua.

Also present were musicians, both gospel and secular, who entertained the mourners throughout the day until Murimi’s body was finally laid to rest shortly after 6pm.
