Residents of Tharaka Nithi want their county’s name changed to Meru South.

Indeed, Chuka elders are threatening to denounce Governor Muthomi Njuki who is opposed to the move.

The debate over the change of name even threatens to subdivide communities as the Tharaka are strongly opposed to it, while a majority of the Maara and Chuka/Igambang’ombe want the Meru South name adopted.

Governor Njuki announced that the county will retain its name and “those who are not comfortable with the name Tharaka Nithi can as well leave the county.”

Chuka elders threatened to denounce Njuki, with Eustace Muturi saying the Governor “has turned against his people and become a dictator.”

He claimed that Njuki is not a native of Tharaka  Nithi “as our research informs us that the governor comes from Kanyuambora in Embu County, and that he became a resident after a goat was offered to our elders by those from his clan.”

He further said that it was as if the Governor was counting the loss of the goat that was offered and that might be the reason he was turning against the residents.

The elders said they were ready to return the goat in a special meeting with the Governor if at all he was counting any loss for the sacrifice that was made.

They said Chuka and Tharaka Nithi County in general was their ancestral land and there was no way they can move to other counties unlike the Governor who can go back to his original Embu County.
