Firebrand Kakamega senator and newly-elected Deputy Senate Minority Leader, Cleophas Malala has finally paid for a suit and a shirt he took on credit from a boutique in Kitale.
Kitale OCPD Jackson Mwenga confirmed that the boutique manager, Peter Gekonge, had recorded a statement with the police - OB number 16/16/3/2018 - complaining that the vocal senator had refused to settle a Sh20,000 debt.
According to Gekonge, the politician stepped into his shop on March 1 and took a blue stripped suit worth Sh17,000 and a pink shirt valued at Sh3,000.
The senator said he would pay for the two items after the ruling in an election petition against Saboti MP Caleb Amisi.
“He told me he would come back and clear the debt after the case. When he left behind his khaki trousers and a dotted green shirt, I was convinced he would honour his promise,’’ Gekonge said, adding that, he had previously made several efforts to reach the senator in vain.
His efforts paid off after the senator sent someone to clear the debt on March 17.
