The late Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo’s wife Nduku Kilonzo told a Machakos court that her late husband received threats a day before his death.

Ms Nduku told the court that her late husband feared for his life.

She told the court how she had wanted to call a company to fumigate insects in their home on April 25, 2013, but her husband refused — saying he could not allow strangers in his house.

“He told me and I quote, ‘My life is in danger. I cannot allow strangers in the house.’ Ms Nduku said while testifying at an inquest into the death of her husband.

“The deceased did not say the nature of the threat. He looked bothered, but did not say anything more.”

Ms Nduku told the court that her husband never gave details about the nature of the threats he was receiving. Her probing was met with a blunt: “What you do not know will never hurt you.” Nduku said.

The widow divulged to the court about some threat the late senator received back in 2012. The threat she said was sent in phone of an SMS through a woman.

“The lady said she had been sent by her boss to kill him. I did not get to know who the lady was,” Ms Nduku told the court.

She told the court that the same threatening message was forwarded to her phone a week later. She however did not report to the police because the deceased had already reported.

The late Senator had allegedly received another threatening message in 2009. The message, the court heard, was delivered to a school in Mbooni, Ms Nduku told the court.

“In the letter there was some powder. The letter was written in red, and I saw it. It was written ‘Mutula Kilonzo breathe your last’,” the court heard.

She also told the court that the last time she saw the deceased was on April 26, 2013 before he left for work.

She told the court that on that material day the deceased was in good health although he had a cold.

“I saw him with some lozenges. I found some in his bag,” she said, adding that the deceased had lost a lot of weight during the campaign.

“He would take some lozenges because of cold caused by dust,” Ms Nduku told the court.

Nduku who was married by the late senator in 1982 said she heard about her husband’s death while she was in Nairobi — and that she was unwell.

“I could not drive. I called an evangelist who drove me to the ranch.” On arrival in the evening she found Mutula Kilonzo Jnr and his wife. There were also doctors and senior government officials.

“I got into the house and sat in the sitting room. I was restricted to see him (the deceased) because the doctors were there doing some investigations,” she said adding that she saw the body of her husband after they got to Lee Funeral home on the same day.

The widow said the deceased used to stay with an old man called Mulwa and his son Keli at Kwa Kyelu ranch.

“The deceased never stayed with relatives. The driver and the bodyguard never used to stay with us,” she told the court.

Ms Nduku disputed claims that some pellets were recovered from the house, and that she had never seen her husband take Pepsi drink.

“I did not see the pellets even before and my husband never took Pepsi. He hardly used carbonated drinks. In the few instances he did he would maybe use Coke,” She said

The inquest will proceed on November 22, 2017.
