Worlds Apart: Muiru and his disabled older brother

As Bishop Pius Muiru family mourned their murdered mother Grace Wangari recently, the strained relationship between Muiru and his older brother Philip Kabue became obvious.

Locals describe their relationship as strained and that they rarely agree on family matters. When asked about it, Muiru said he doesn't despise his brother who runs a shop at nearby shopping centre.

An obituary on March 27 in a local daily missed Kabue's name but Muiru said, "There was a problem in the obituary. We are eight children Kabue's name was missing was no big deal. Even Charles Wainaina, my elder brother’s name was not included. A similar mistake was made by a local vernacular radio when making the death announcement".

He added that, "It is because we were rushing against time and dealing with circumstances that took our mother. I should not be faulted".

Kabue who is physically challenged and has no family has publicly criticised his brother claiming he has kept aloof and doesn't care about him. His small, old-fashioned house borders his brother's maisonette that is well-secured with a perimeter wall inside the large family compound.

Locals see it as ironical juxtaposition but Kabue told The Nairobian "Sometimes I decide to keep peace and be happy with all. I just want a quiet life".

On the burial day, he showed up dressed differently from the rest of family members. Residents claim that during the burial of their brother in 2005, he declined to wear the uniform suit the rest of the gamily donned.

"We don't know what happened between the two but even during 2007 elections he campaigned against his brother who was gunning for presidency" said George Kiarie, a local resident.
