Police are investigating the death of an ex-Canadian military officer rumoured to have died after taking ‘too much’ Viagra.

Himbury James Wilfred’s body was found in his wife’s house, Christine Achieng’ in Rangwe, Homa Bay County.

Speaking to The Nairobian, Achieng’s sister-in-law, Jane Obiero, claims that on December 14, they were all shocked when Achieng’ arrived home with a mzungu, whom she claimed was her hubby.

“Achieng’ had been married to her husband from Rangwe with whom they had three children. However, under unclear circumstances, she went to Canada after her husband died.

Last December, we were all shocked when she arrived home accompanied by a mzungu whom she introduced as her husband,” she said.

Obiero claims that she noticed Achieng’ was unwell and three days later, on the 17th, she was taken to hospital in Kisumu, leaving behind her 72-year-old Canadian husband.

“He was always aloof that man. When his wife was taken to hospital, he would go to Homa Bay town every evening to buy canned food and light the jiko himself and cook,” she said.

Another neighbour, Judith Oduor, says the man was weird and would walk naked in his unfenced compound or sometimes only in his briefs.

“He talked to no one and was a bit hostile. Even when he got sick, we asked him to go to hospital but he chased us away,” Judith narrated.

Judith said the man locked himself for three days indoors prompting her and a neighbour’s son to check on him.

“We found the door locked from the inside but the window was open. We peeped in and the boy tried calling and talking to him in vain. He was naked and looked lifeless, so we alerted the area chief who then called the police,” she said.

Obiero added that while his wife was in hospital, the mzungu had developed a liking for a young girl in the village who had sat for her KSCE.

“He used to stop her on her way to and from the river and asked her to stay with him until his wife recovered. She did this and would go back to her father’s compound. Perhaps that informed the rumour

Commandant John Omusanga said that the samples have been taken for further examination to ascertain if the Canadian could have died as a result of overdose of Viagra.

“We are investigating whether the Canadian’s death was caused by an overdose of drugs or not,” he said.

According to the deceased’s passport found in the house, he was a former military officer in the British Army.

Omusanga added that police had contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs over death of the foreigner.

According to the identification documents, the dead man hailed from Islewoth GBR in Canada.
