Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin Road in Lang’ata, Nairobi is the longest road name in Kenya.
The 31-letter road that connects from Hardy, Lang’ata to Mukoma Road off Magadi Road in Ongata Rongai, is named after the spiritual leader of the Bohra community who visited Kenya from India in January 2002.
His visit 15 years ago was followed by rains and the Kenyan media baptised him as ‘the rainmaker.’ Before he succumbed to cardiac arrest on January 17, 2014 in India, he visited Kenya again — and was hosted by President Mwai Kibaki in December 2008.
The Bohra community across the world observed 40 days of mourning before he was buried in Mumbai, India. A road in Karachi, Pakistan also bears his name.
Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin Road competes well with others like “Pekwachnamaykoskwaskwaypinwanik” which is the name of a lake in Canada with 31 letters.
The Canadian lake is ranked top of the 20 longest names of places and roads. Others with such names vary between 30 and 85 characters.
In the same league with this Kenya’s road is a wetland in Finland with 35 characters. The name is the second longest in Europe.
The name of a hill in New Zealand has 85 letters and is listed in the Guinness World Records as the longest place name in the world.
