During his tour of Eldoret last week, the Head of State said in a rally: "There are those who keep on making wild allegations claiming that Waiguru is whatever to me, or so many other things, but I have mine and I don't need another one."
Political commentators have been debating the clarifications and its ramifications and the Nairobian sought the views of respected legal scholar and political analyst, Prof Makau Mutua, and what he sees in his crystal ball regarding President Uhuru's take on rumours regarding him and CS Waiguru.
Prof Mutua told The Nairobian from his World Bank posting in New York: "I am shocked Kenyatta could wade into such a demeaning conversation. The man either has terrible advisors, or he doesn't think through his statements before he speaks. I know Kibaki denied that (Mary) Wambui was his wife, but he didn't so only under duress from Lucy. Why would Kenyatta give credence to rumours if they aren't true?" wondered the SUNY Distinguished Professor at Buffalo Law School. Prof Mutua added: "His comments weren't Presidential at all. He should sack Waiguru instead of sinking this low to defend her. Such statements and intransigence only increase the suspicion that there's more than meets the eye between him and the CS. I think the man has a loose tongue and unbridled anger."
His attack on Alfred Keter for his motion of impeachment of Waiguru shows that Kenyatta doesn't understand the separation of powers, or the constitutional authority of Parliament to oversee the executive. And he's dictatorial if he does but goes on to intimidate the MP. Again, it shows that Kenyatta will go to any length to defend Waiguru. Why? What does she hold against him such that if he sacked her then she would spill the beans?
It's a damning matter. Kenyatta is digging his own political grave by stubbornly and inscrutably standing by the tainted Waiguru."
The good Prof concluded that "Kenyan politicians are known for Mpango wa Kando arrangements. Mr Kenyatta's defense of Waiguru is unlikely to be believed by the public, just like the public didn't believe Kibaki's denial that Wambui was his customary law wife. You can take that to the bank, mate!"
