Imenti Central MP Gideon Mwiti Irea has quit drinking and closed down his beer distribution business as a way of fighting alcohol consumption in the country.
Mwiti came into the national limelight in March following accusations of rape leading to a case which has since been suspended by High Court judge Weldon Korir to allow the Imenti Central MP to challenge the legality of his prosecution.
Mwiti, nicknamed ‘Livondo’ in Meru because he’s loaded like a bank, said he raked in huge incomes from alcohol sales but decided to quit after leading raids on joints dealing in second generation drinks. He says the raids opened his eyes on the harm alcohol causes people.
“I used to sell alcohol in Nairobi making up to Sh300, 000 a day, but I have closed that business,” said the MP. “I used to drink Martel, the most expensive alcohol in the world, but I have quit because alcohol is alcohol and there is no difference between second generation and first generation.”
Mwiti, who operated the Havana Bar in Westlands Nairobi, thanked President Uhuru Kenyatta for ordering the war against second generation alcohol, saying it had turned energetic youth into zombies. Mwiti promised to henceforth mentor people and transform their lives.
He was speaking during a fundraising at the St Antony’s Irinda Catholic Church in Imenti North sub-county where National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi and MPs Florence Kajuju, Zipporah Kering and Meru Speaker Joseph Kaberia were present.
