Nairobians may never have to worry about unlit streets and tunnels again, this is after the county set aside Sh875 million to erect new streetlights across the city.
County Finance Executive Officer Gregory Mwakanongo says they believe a well-lit city will be a deterrent to crime. “I have allocated Sh244.6 million for rehabilitation of existing streetlights and Sh630.8 million for completion of ongoing and erection of new lighting projects,” Mwakanongo said.
In April this year, Kenya Power also embarked on upgrading of streetlights in Nairobi. The company’s managing director, Ben Chumo, said they were targeting to upgrade 4,200 streetlights to promote a 24-hour economy.
Meanwhile, the World Bank is expected to inject millions of shillings in the ongoing project to light the streets of Nairobi. Mwakanongo said the bank will invest Sh182.4 million in streetlighting and public lighting in various parts of the city.
