I am the ‘only’ wife of slain army pilot – woman

Two women are fighting over a dead army pilot whose chopper developed mechanical problems and crashed in Lamu County.

Pilot Sammy Morrell  from the elite 50 Air Calvary Battalion, crashed in Bargoni army camp and his death has deepened the rift between his wife and an alleged ‘second wife,’ both of whom were part of 33-year-old army major and qualified pilot instructor’s life.

His wife, Jesca Kiplagat (pictured), who is said to have lived with him until his death, is locked in a dispute with Doris Chepkoech, the other woman who also claims to be the pilot’s wife.

In a lengthy Facebook post, Jesca revealed how she met Morrell in a rickety matatu headed to Kapsowar in 2003 and developed mutual feelings, which later led to their union.

But Doris, an Administration Police officer based in the city, claims Morrell was in a difficult marriage before meeting her and they lived together until his death.  Doris claims she met Morrell in 2008 while on a parade at the Nyayo Stadium, but only learnt that he was married after she became pregnant, a year into their relationship.

Doris now claims that, “He (Morrell) visited our home and I also visited his parents to formalise our marriage as he had already filed for divorce.”

Further investigations by The Nairobian reveal that Jesca had gone for further studies in the UK, but upon returning home, Doris had allegedly moved into their Utawala home where Jesca lived with her husband and son before she left for studies. An exclusive source also revealed that during Jesca’s farewell party, Morrell wished her well and promised to wait for her.

“This is a lifetime opportunity for my wife’s career growth. I will take care of our son and wait for the love of my life,” Morrell reportedly said in front of their invited guests which Doris was allegedly part of.

Following the death of the pilot, Jesca reportedly filed a petition in court for Doris to be kicked out, but it was suspended as she was not served with court orders for her eviction from the Utawala home.

Morrell’s obituary published in one of the local dailies on July 15 mentioned none of the two women. The Nairobian has learnt that the decision to omit them was reached by the family after wrangles erupted between the two.    When contacted for comment, Jessca told The Nairobian; “I knew Doris was his other woman and it was in public domain.”

A requiem mass for Morell was held at the Embakasi Garisson on July 16.

He will be laid to rest on July 18 in Cheptongie Village.
