On May 25, Machakos residents were astounded to find 15 dead bodies lying along the Machakos-Wote highway.
The bizarre incident brought business to a standstill.
Speaking to The Nairobian, some of the residents alleged that the corpses were among 26 unclaimed bodies that have been preserved at the Machakos Level Five Hospital morgue since late last year and were being ferried to Mitheu Public Cemetery for burial.
It is claimed that the truck driver who was transporting the bodies dropped them accidentally.
When contacted for comment, Machakos central ward representative Cornelius Kitheka termed the incident as unfortunate and urged the county government and all concerned stakeholders to carry out sensitive activities in a discreet manner to avoid alarming the public.
The road was temporarily closed to allow the police, hospital staff and county government workers to collect the corpses.
Efforts to reach Machakos County health executive, Naomi Mutie were futile as her phone went unanswered.
