Men who eat ugali and sukuma might be suffering from low sperm count. If you live in Nairobi you could be cleverer than that Kenyan in Kanyam-Kago village in Nyanza and you may get pregnant more easily if your food contains more calories.

These are just some ‘weird’ research findings that keep popping up from scientists. Well, here are 10 ‘weird’ research studies that have been done in recent times:

1. Nai is Africa’s most intelligent city

Branding Nairobi the ‘most intelligent city in Africa’ sounds like an April’s Fools Day’s prank. With all the dirt, traffic, pathetic roads, and crime the now not so ‘green city in the sun’ should be anything but intelligent. This research - that listed Nairobi among 21 other cities in the world- was done by New York-based Intelligent City Forum this February.

2. Kenyans the ‘ugliest Africans’

A bogus South African outfit, the ‘Most Beautiful People of Africa Awards’, has consistently handed Kenyans the ‘most ugly Africans’ title. We have ‘defended’ this title for close to ten years now. How they carry out the “research” remains a mystery.

3. One pack is better than six in bed

A research by Turkey’s Erciyes University, in September 2014, claims that pot-bellied men last longer during sex than their slimmer and fitter counterparts. This is because fat around the belly means more estradiol, a female sex hormone that inhibits orgasm in males. This, the researchers said, was because “as the body mass index (BMI) increased, the number of patients decreased in the premature ejaculation group”. Those with higher BMI lasted in the “sack” 7.3 minutes compared to two minutes for the six pack group.

4. Ladies, watch your skirt

The British Medical Journal in October 2014, claimed that an increase from one skirt size to the next leads to a 33 per cent increase in breast cancer risk. An increase of two sizes increases the risk factor to 77 per cent. This is principally because increase in waistline is one of the key conditions for development of breast cancer.

5. Uhuru Kenyatta third best Prezo in Africa?

Gallup Inc, an American pollster, raised political temperatures, last August, when they unleashed a poll that claimed President Kenyatta is the third best Head of State in Africa. Critics, including the Opposition, dismissed the poll. Jubilee, naturally, basked in the warmth of the bonga points that came with that poll.

6. A beer a day keeps the doctor away

John Mututho might not like this, but research conducted by Athens’ Harokopio University, in 2012, claimed that a bottle of beer a day reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke by 30 per cent. Darker beers like stouts and ales were shown to have better bedroom effects than lagers.

7. The eight-glasses-of-water-a-day nonsense

Researchers in Glasgow, Scotland, claimed, in 2012, that the eight-glass-a-day theory “is not only nonsense, but thoroughly debunked nonsense” and  also a theory “fronted, advocated and exaggerated by organisations with vested interests like bottled water brands.”

8. The quickie way to shed excess weight

According to a 10-year study by Queens University in Belfast, published in 2010. Those who have sex on a regular basis are not only said to live longer but also shed kilos, hence the term “sexercise.” Weekly quickies that lasts 20 minutes each burn 7,500 calories annually, which is equivalent to jogging 120 kilometres!

9. More calories equals a baby boy?

Research from Oxford in 2008, claimed that huge consumption of calories during conception increased the chances of having a baby boy, bouncing or not. So, pile on those kilos.

Sukuma wiki reduces sperm count!

In 2013, California’s Loma Linda University, in the US of A, claimed that it found those who overindulge in kale (sukuma wiki) and vegetables have a concentration of 50 million sperm per millilitre of semen compared to meat eaters at 70 million. Na watu wa mrenda je?
