Officers upset over certificates of merit

Some police officers are grumbling over the awarding of merit certificates to colleagues they claim do not deserve them.

The disgruntled officers claim that most of the merits for Kenya Police Service went to non-performing colleagues. About 300 officers received the certificates in December 2014 and are likely to be promoted.

According to the officers, the certificates were awarded on the basis of cronyism and not performance.

One of the officers claimed the exercise was not transparent. He said that it would be important for the top brass to explain the criteria used for the awards to address disquiet amongst officers who missed out.

“Apart from the Special Crime Prevention Unit, many in general duty and other units did not warrant the merits that were given based on friendship,” claimed the officer.

Meanwhile, more than 100 police officers who were to be decorated by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) are anxious after waiting for too long.

They were to be feted last December but the exercise was pushed to January following the resignation of Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo.

Macharia Njeru, the IPOA chairman, promised The Nairobian that the function would be done in January. However, with January gone, there is now speculation that the exercise could have been sabotaged by senior officers, who are reportedly keen on having their cronies on the list of beneficiaries.
