All students of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) will be forced to study a compulsory driving lessons.

This was revealed by the university vice chancellor Prof Fredrick Otieno who noted that the lessons will provide learners with competent-based practical lessons in a move to curb accidents on roads.

Prof Otieno said MMUST wants to contribute to reduction of accidents by having qualified drivers on the road.

“Within the next three months, we will start a driving school in the university to ensure that our students are equipped well with skills required on the roads,” Prof Otieno said when inaugurating the university’s 2018 Careers Week.

This comes after over 150 people died through road accidents during December 2017 festive season as per the statement released by National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Police Service on 14th December 2017.

“We have experienced an increase in the number of fatal accidents. From December 1, 2017, we have tragically lost 150 lives across the country. A majority of these accidents have been attributed to human error and are preventable if all road users exercise caution,” read the statement.

Clifton Kisera, an Education student, said that the introduction of the driving classes would help keep the students more committed even during their free time.

“I applaud the move by the university management since it will help us gain more skills and even open an extra job opportunity for us in the job market. This new course will also keep us on our toes to ensure that we perform well in class and also in the driving section,” Kisera, a third year Education student said.

MMUST will be joining tertiary education institutions where graduands will be leaving the university with not only a program certificate but also a driving license.
