I made money as a mortuary attendant in first year-Johansen Oduor, Chief Government Pathologist

My most memorable time in campus was my first year and last year as an undergrad.

First year because of new freedom and new friends, and the last, because after six years in medical school, it was time to say bye.

My best lecturer was Prof George Magoha who taught and made us understand the principles of surgery. He was also approachable (medical school was very stressful and you needed such teachers in order not to lose focus).

Let me not talk about my worst lecturer. He may come for my neck!

My best unit was ‘Surgery,’ which was a break from boring and common undergraduate courses. I made my first coin in campus working as a morgue attendant at Chiromo during school holidays after first year.

I really never dated as an undergraduate, but for fun, I travelled or went clubbing to Visions Club along Kimathi Street and Zig-Zag in Hurlingam.

Collegemates I can’t forget include S. Kariuki, now a lawyer in Nairobi. The first time we took a Tusker at Visions in first year, ‘Karis’ insisted we return to campus for fear his mother would find  out. I have never forgotten that and always remind him of the same.

Raphael Gichere, now a very brilliant surgeon, was very arrogant, but good-hearted. He was the best man during my wedding!

Dr Johansen Oduor graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Nairobi in 2000 and his master’s in Pathology in 2008.
