Moses Kajwang, Senator Homa Bay County: We drank 'royco' from Mabatini

Moses Kajwang, Homa Bay Senator

I joined Moi University in Eldoret to study Information Science.

That was way back in 1998. I loved my course, with my favourite subject being Development Concepts, which was taught by Prof Joshua Akong’a, now in Kitale Campus.

My favourite lecturer was Dr Cephas Odini - he would even sort me out sometimes when I was broke. Interestingly, whenever I tried to refund the money, he would always tell me to keep it.

I never involved myself in any business or side hustle since my school fees was taken care of by Helb.

Some of my famous schoolmates include Mombasa Senator, Hassan Omar Hassan, and Homa Bay County Assembly Speaker, Samuel ‘Matata’ Ochillo, whose disappearance once caused a huge strike in Moi University.

I was actively involved in student politics and made history for being the first second-year student to be elected the Moi University Students Organisation (Muso) Secretary General.

The following year, I vied for Muso Chairmanship but lost to my friend Kennedy Makasembo, currently the Migori Chairman for Kenya Union of Post Primary School Teachers Union (Kuppet).

Whenever I was free, we would visit a nearby village called Mabs (Mabatini) or Kapteng’ut, where we would indulge in ‘Royco.’ This was a traditional liquor that was served in Royco containers.

When we had cash, especially at the start of the semester after receiving ‘boom’ money, we would go raving at Sam’s in Eldoret.

Moses Kajwang’ graduated from Moi University in 2003 with a bachelors degree in Information Science.
