A middle aged man is nursing injuries after he was beaten by a group of fellow male commercial sex workers in Mtwapa.
The irate group accused the victim of employing charms to win over white men who roam the streets of the town Kilifi County at night shopping for gay sex.
During the incident that took place on Saturday night, about six gay sex workers descended on their colleague, identified only with his trade name Fatma, after a lean muscled white man picked him over them.
According to Makena Mbiti, a commercial sex worker in the town who was among those who witnessed the incident, the men were angry because Fatma’s popularity with gay white tourists was soaring.
On this day, the irate male prostitutes reportedly snapped when the muscled man, accompanied by two heavy set black bodyguards, arrived and gave the whole group a casual look before whistling and winking at Fatma, who crossed the street to meet him.
“It was the third in the night that a white man was picking Fatma as his colleagues watched. They had warned him to leave, arguing that he had earned enough for the night and should let the white man to them. But he defied them,” Makena told Crazy Monday.
“When he walked to meet the man, they followed him and started raining blows and kicks on him.”
The furious group claimed Fatma was not winning the hearts of clients because of his looks or because he was better in bed than them but due to juju.
“Tumechoka kungoja kila siku kupata Wazungu kwa sababu ya huyu mwanga! (We are tired of waiting forever to be noticed by the whites because of one wizard!)” They shouted.
During the fracas, one of the men who attacked Fatma got hold of a 200 dollar note that fell from his small handbag.
This that led to another fight over the money, with some demanding that the foreign currency be taken to a backstreet dealer and exchanged into shillings before being shared out equally among the group.
“Aisha, the man who picked the dollar screamed aloud attracting the attention of police on patrol who came to find out what was happening. The group hurriedly dispersed fearing arrest and Aisha was able to keep his find,” narrated Makena.
The bodyguards of the potential client intervened and rushed Fatma to hospital. Meanwhile, Simon Obiro, a gay sex worker worker who goes by the name Suzie in the town, separately told Crazy Monday that the injured Fatma seems to have prospered in the face of adversity meted on him by his colleagues a few days ago.
He says after being discharged from hospital the next day courtesy of his benefactor, the white man invited Fatma to live with him in a nearby luxurious beach hotel where rumours have it that he is treating him like a queen.
Over the last two days, they have been spotted in various shopping malls, with the man said to be German showering Fatma with gifts.
“We are lucky because business has improved since he left. At least he is now with one man. Here in the streets, no one had a chance against his juju,” Simon said.
