Sh1,460 ‘bangi’ gets Kakamega woman Sh80,000 fine

A woman aged 27 was on Friday fined Sh80, 000 with an alternative of 18 months imprisonment after she pleaded guilty to the charge of being in possession of outlawed bhang.

Carolyne Mbaisi admitted to have been in possession of 73 rolls of the drug valued at Sh1, 460 at her house in Sichirayi Estate, Kakamega Central District.

According to State Prosecutor, Paul Juma, the accused was arrested on January 31 after police officers received a tip-off from the members of the public that Mbaisi was peddling the drug.

“Administration Police Maurice Munene raided the house of the accused after they got information that she was in possession of the illegal drug. After a thorough search at her house, the officers recovered 73 rolls of cannabis sativa (bhang) with a street value of Sh1, 460,” said Mr. Juma.

The accused who seemed calm admitted to both the charges and the prosecution facts making Kakamega Chief Magistrate Bildad Ochieng’ convict her on her own plea of guilty.

The magistrate ordered her to pay Sh80, 000 or serve a jail term of 18 months. Mbaisi was given 14 days to lodge an appeal if dissatisfied with the judgement.
